Ford Ranger Wildtrak Review: A Comprehensive Look at the Pickup Truck
Introduction to the Ford Ranger
The Ford Ranger – a name not so popular this side of the world, but it is the Hilux from Ford with a better image. Previously, the Ranger was built in Thailand, but this model is coming from South Africa, so expect some off-roading prowess. I got the Wildtrak variant to test, which is the top-spec model.
Exterior

From the first glance, the Ford Ranger definitely looks like a workhorse. However, it doesn't appear cheap from the outside. Ford has paid attention to the overall design of the car. Here are some key features:
- 18” alloy wheels in the Wildtrak variant
- More color choices available
- Different cabin options, but the Wildtrak only comes as Double Cab
It has that heavy-duty look and, to some extent, does justice to its rugged image.
Interior

The interior is where the Ford Ranger shines, particularly in its Wildtrak variant. The seats are comfortable, and there is a generous dose of leather all around, giving a premium feel. Noteworthy features include:
- Signature orange stitching on the seats
- 8” touchscreen infotainment system
- Electric driver seat
- Rear camera and parking sensors
- Cruise control and hill assist
The legroom is great in the front but not so great at the back. The overall quality impresses in the front, but it doesn't carry over as well to the rear. Overall, I appreciate Ford’s approach; a commercial vehicle doesn’t have to look and feel dull.
Drive Experience

The Ford Ranger Wildtrak is powered by a 3.2-liter 6-cylinder diesel engine producing 197 BHP and 470 Nm of torque. This was my first experience with a diesel-powered vehicle, and I must say it is fairly quiet for a diesel. While you’re not going to do 0-100 runs in this car, all that torque is designed for towing – something this vehicle excels at:
- Tows trailers up to 3500 kg in weight
- Smooth 6-speed automatic gearbox
The Ranger also has a full-fledged 4x4 system, but bear in mind that this system isn’t as useful in the desert as one might expect. However, it performs perfectly well in all other terrains.
Verdict

The Ford Ranger is an actual pickup and not the ‘pimping’ Sierra or Silverado. It is designed for heavy lifting with a touch of refinement. While it is definitely not a polished product, the overall package of comfort, power, off-road ability, and towing capacity can appeal to the youth, provided they can overlook the pretentious image.
