Hyundai has announced plans to introduce digital key technology in its future models, allowing drivers to unlock and start their vehicles using their smartphones. This innovative technology will be available in a selected range of 2019 models.
How the Technology Works
Users can download the digital key as a smart application on their mobile devices, enabling up to four authorized users to operate the same vehicle using this app.
Connection Technology
The system utilizes Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, which offers advanced security features. It operates through antennas mounted on the front door handles and a wireless charging pad inside the car. Users can unlock the vehicle by bringing an authorized smartphone close to the car door, while starting the engine requires placing the phone on the wireless charging pad and pressing the start button.

Vehicle Sharing
When sharing a vehicle with others, the car owner can specify the available functions for each digital key, including:
- Setting a time or distance limit for a specific key's validity
- Configuring an alert to notify the owner if the car is driven over a certain speed
- Detecting if the vehicle exits a predefined geographical area
Convenience and Ease
This technology provides exceptional levels of convenience and ease for drivers, as it is designed to adapt to the changing nature of mobility and vehicle ownership, especially given the increasing popularity of car-sharing programs. With the proliferation of this program, additional software and functions can be added to the digital key to facilitate a rental system that simplifies the sharing process between owners and users without the need for in-person meetings.
Continued Use of Traditional Keys
The company will continue to offer traditional keys for situations where the use of the digital key may not be possible, such as leaving the vehicle at a repair shop or for valet services.
Future Plans
Hyundai has set ambitious plans to become the first automobile manufacturer to introduce smart fingerprint technology that allows drivers to unlock and start their vehicles. Last year, in 2018, it announced that this technology would be available in select markets on the new generation of the Hyundai Santa Fe during the first quarter of 2019.
