RIP: The Infiniti QX50, QX55 are dead

In a move that is designed to reposition its market image, Infiniti, the luxury arm of Nissan, has revealed plans to cease production of its QX50 and QX55 by the year's end 2025.
With this decision, the brand takes a plunge towards improving its products and meets a more upscale section of the automotive market.
The QX50 and QX55: A Brief Overview
Launched in 2019, the QX50 has been a flagship of Infiniti's range, acknowledged for its technology, variable compression turbocharged engine.

The QX55 was launched in 2022 and provided a sportier, coupe-y styling, which would appeal to a niche market of the buyers looking for the balance between luxury and performance. Despite their contributions, both models have faced challenges in a rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
Rationale Behind the Discontinuation
In line with Infiniti's general strategy to go upmarket, the decision to phase out these models is aligned. Ponz Pandikuthira, Infiniti's senior VP, explained that as the brand starts to add more premium vehicles such as the QX60 and QX80, the QX50 and QX55 well seem out of step.

This shift is in line with planned action to target higher-margin vehicles, even if it potentially excludes price-sensitive customers.
Introducing the QX60 and QX65
In order to offset the loss of departing models, Infiniti is set to roll out the three-row QX60 and the two-, coupe-like QX65.

These latest innovations are expected to provide improved functionality and design features appealing to the high end SUV community. With its generous three-row seating footprint, the QX60 targets family travellers wishing for a comfortable, classy experience, and the QX65 is likely to target customers looking for a more athletic style at the expense of nothing else but luxury.
Market Performance and Future Outlook
Infiniti suffered a 10.2% sales drop in the car market in the US in 2024 and the QX50 ranked as its second best selling model, with 10,722 units sold.

Even with these statistics, the company is not down beat about the direction the brand will take. By focusing on more premium models, Infiniti aims to enhance its brand image and profitability.
This strategic shift is not without risks. The luxury car industry is highly competitive and to move upmarket is not just about better products, but also having an appealing brand story to draw in sophisticated buyers. Infiniti's triumph will depend on its capacity to launch cars in which luxury, performance and innovation meet.
