MINI Countryman

Introduction to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is an independent organization that conducts safety tests on various vehicles. Recently, it performed a front crash test where the vehicle collided with a solid barrier (like a tree) at a speed of 40 mph. This test measures how well a vehicle absorbs impact from the front, with ratings of “Good” being particularly challenging to achieve.

Test Details

Tested Vehicles

The test included 12 vehicles, among them:

  • MINI Countryman
  • Chevrolet Volt
  • Ford C-Max Hybrid
  • Mitsubishi Lancer
  • Scion FR-S
  • Subaru BRZ
  • Scion xB
  • Hyundai Veloster
  • Fiat 500
  • Nissan Juke
  • Mazda 5
  • Nissan Leaf

Test Results

Among all the vehicles tested, the MINI was the only one to receive a “Good” rating. In contrast, the Mazda received the lowest rating. The Chevrolet Volt was awarded the Top Safety Pick due to its advanced safety features, which include:

  • Automatic braking
  • Collision warning

The Countryman achieved the second-best rating, as it lacks some of the safety mechanisms found in the Volt.

Advice for Buyers

So, next time you consider purchasing a compact car, don't forget to check the safety ratings.
