Abu Dhabi Installs 40 Infrared Cameras for Enhanced Road Safety

Introduction

Abu Dhabi is taking significant steps to improve road safety by installing 40 infrared cameras at various locations throughout the city. These cameras will catch vehicles that jump red lights without the use of a flash, allowing drivers to believe their violations have gone unnoticed.

Capabilities of the Infrared Cameras

According to Brigadier Hussain Ahmad Al Harithi, director of the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrol Directorate, the new cameras are equipped with advanced technology:

• Coverage of up to five lanes in all directions.
• Ability to read license plates of all moving vehicles.
• Count the number of cars on the road at any given time.
• Assess the average speed of vehicles.
• Monitor pedestrian traffic and their movement direction.
