New Mandatory Seatbelt Law in the UAE
Details of the New Law
Good news for safety advocates in the UAE! The Federal Traffic Council has approved a new law mandating all vehicle occupants to wear seatbelts. Drivers will face a penalty of AED 400 for each passenger not wearing a seatbelt.
Official Statements
Lieutenant General Mohammed Saif Al Zafin, Chairman of the Federal Traffic Council, stated: "The fine will be AED 400 for each occupant who fails to wear a seatbelt. For instance, if the driver is wearing their seatbelt while the three other passengers are not, they will incur a total penalty of AED 1,200 for the three passengers, along with four traffic points."
Safety Measures Implemented
The council has also introduced measures to reduce accident fatalities:
- Children under ten years of age and adults shorter than 145 cm are prohibited from sitting in the front passenger seat.
- It is mandatory for children under four years old to use child safety seats; otherwise, they will be fined AED 400 and incur four traffic points.
Statistics and Safety Goals
Official statistics reveal that the number of accident victims reached 725 in 2016, with authorities aiming for a target of three fatalities per 100,000 people in the UAE.
