New Traffic Fines in the UAE: What You Need to Know

Introduction

In an effort to enhance road safety for all users in the United Arab Emirates, the Ministry of Interior has introduced a set of new traffic fines. These include penalties for speeding, reckless driving, and littering while driving. Below, we outline the recently implemented fines that drivers should be aware of, along with the corresponding black points and penalties.

Traffic Fines

Speeding

• Exceeding the speed limit by less than 20 km/h: 300 AED
• Exceeding the speed limit by less than 30 km/h: 600 AED
• Exceeding the speed limit by less than 40 km/h: 700 AED
• Exceeding the speed limit by less than 50 km/h: 1000 AED
• Exceeding the speed limit by less than 60 km/h: 1500 AED + 6 black points + vehicle impoundment for 15 days
• Exceeding the speed limit by more than 60 km/h: 2000 AED + 12 black points + vehicle impoundment for 30 days
• Exceeding the posted speed limit by more than 80 km/h: 3000 AED + 23 black points + vehicle impoundment for 60 days

Reckless Driving

• Running a red light: 1000 AED + 12 black points + vehicle impoundment for 30 days
• Obstructing traffic: 1000 AED + 6 black points
• Dangerous overtaking: 1000 AED + 4 black points
• Driving without license plates: 3000 AED + 23 black points + vehicle impoundment for 90 days
• Endangering the lives of others: 2000 AED + 23 black points + vehicle impoundment for 60 days

Driving Under the Influence

• Driving under the influence of alcohol: Maximum fine of 20,000 AED and/or imprisonment as determined by the court + 23 black points + vehicle impoundment for 60 days
• Driving under the influence of drugs: Imprisonment and fine as determined by the court + vehicle impoundment for 60 days + revocation of driver's license for 365 days

Using a Phone While Driving

• Using a phone while driving: 800 AED + 4 black points

Ignoring Safety Regulations

• Not wearing a seatbelt while driving: 400 AED + 4 black points
• Driving with worn-out tires: 500 AED + 4 black points + vehicle impoundment for 7 days
• Driving with expired insurance/registration: 500 AED + 4 black points + vehicle impoundment for 7 days
• Tinting windows beyond 50%: 1500 AED
• Driving a noisy vehicle: 2000 AED + 6 black points
• Illegally transporting passengers: 3000 AED + 24 black points + vehicle impoundment for 30 days

Dangerous Behaviors

• Littering while driving: 1000 AED + 6 black points
• Driving all-terrain vehicles on public roads: 3000 AED + vehicle impoundment for 90 days
• Crossing the road in violation of traffic rules: 400 AED
• Failing to maintain a safe distance between vehicles: 400 AED + 4 black points
• Overtaking from the wrong lane (excess lane): 1000 AED + 6 black points
