In an attempt to increase road safety and reduce road fatalties, Police forces in the UAE have come together to implement new traffic laws with stricter penalties. Dangerous habits such as using a mobile phone while driving and driving over the speed limit, are now penalized with a fine of AED 3,000, 23 black points, and 60 days vehicle impound.
Speeding over the posted limit:
- Less than 20 km/h: AED 300
- Less than 30 km/h:AED 600
- Less than 40 km/h: AED 700
- Less than 50 km/h: AED 1,000
- Less than 60 km/h: AED 1,500 + 6 black points + 15 days vehicle impound
- More than 60 km/h: AED 2,000 + 12 black points + 30 days vehicle impound
- More than 80 km/h: AED 3,000 + 23 black points + 60 days vehicle impound
Driving recklessly:
- Using a mobile phone while driving: AED 800 + 4 black points
- Swerving dangerously: AED 1,000 + 4 black points
- Obstructing traffic: AED 1,000 + 6 black points
- Jumping a red light: AED 1,000 + 12 black points + 30 days vehicle impound
- Endangering the lives of others: AED 2,000 + 23 black points + 60 days vehicle impound
- Driving without number plates: AED 3,000 + 23 black points + 90 days vehicle impound
Driving under the influence:
- Alcohol: Maximum fine of AED 20,000 + 23 black points + 60 days vehicle impound
- Illicit drugs: 60 days vehicle impound + 365 days license confiscation + fine and jail time decided by court
Safety:
- Failure to fasten seatbelt: AED 400 + 4 black points
- Driving on worn-out tires: AED 500 + 4 black points + 7 days vehicle impound
- Driving without a valid insurance / registration: AED 500 + 4 black points + 7 days vehicle impound
- Exceeding the permitted 50% window tint: AED 1,500
- Driving noisy vehicle: AED 2,000 + 6 black points
- Transporting passengers illegally: AED 3,000 + 24 black points + 30 days vehicle impound
Road etiquette:
- Jaywalking: AED 400
- Tailgating and not leaving sufficient distance: AED 400 + 4 black points
- Littering while driving: AED 1,000 + 6 black points
- Overtaking on the hard shoulder: AED 1,000 + 6 black points
- Using a quad-bike on the road: AED 3,000 + 90 days vehicle impound
