Critics of CVT engines have a reason to smile. Nissan has made some changes to its CVT engines. Now, driving a CVT vehicle feels similar to driving a traditional automatic car. This new system, known as D-Step Shift, is set to debut in 2015 in vehicles equipped with CVT engines, including the Tiida, Sentra, Altima, and Pathfinder. Other models will offer this technology in 2016.

Features of the D-Step System

The D-Step provides a gear-shifting feel similar to that of automatic cars while retaining the CVT technology. Nissan believes that CVT enhances fuel efficiency and improves driving dynamics by increasing the gear ratio during acceleration, rather than shifting from one gear to another. However, the question remains: Does the annoying sound of the CVT engine also improve?
