Porsche 963 RSP: A Le Mans Legend You Can (Almost) Drive
Tags:

Porsche has raised eyebrows and pulses by revealing the 963 RSP—a street-driven version of its championship-winning LMDh prototype. This one-off model, named after racing legend Roger Searle Penske, celebrates 50 years since a road-legal version of the iconic 917 first inspired the brand’s endurance credentials.
From Track to Tarmac
Unveiled near the Circuit de la Sarthe just ahead of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 963 RSP is rooted in the racing 963 chassis built by Multimatic. Porsche crafted an entirely new tub specifically for this project, aiming to replicate the raw race-car feel while adding just enough modifications to make limited public road driving possible.

A Nod to History in Every Detail
Porsche took no shortcuts in crafting this homage. The car wears a hand-applied “Martini Silver” paint—a painstaking process on carbon-Kevlar bodywork—mirroring the 917’s storied finish. Unique fender vents, removed carbon wing plates, satin-black hardware, and even enamel Porsche badging reinforce its road-inspired styling.
Inside, the cockpit echoes the elegance of the original road-going 917 with tan leather and Alcantara throughout. Comfort features like a cushioned single-piece carbon seat, leather-wrapped wheel, and even a removable cup holder add just enough refinement to hint at usability.

Mechanical Changes for Road Use
While the hybrid V8 and high-energy battery remain largely intact, Porsche raised the ride height and softened the Multimatic dampers to help it navigate ordinary roads more gracefully. They also recalibrated the electronics to support road lighting, turn signals, and emissions compatibility, though full legal road registration isn’t on the cards.

How Rare Is This?
There’s only one 963 RSP and it’s not for purchase. It will debut at Le Mans, then travel to Goodwood Festival of Speed and Monterey Car Week before being delivered to Penske later this year. Sad.
