2015 Mini Cooper S Review - A Modern Classic

2015 Mini Cooper S Front Styling

The 2015 Mini Cooper S has a rich history, having been born in 1959 under the British Motor Corporation (BMC). This little wonder changed budget motoring history and was an immediate success.

Many variants were produced until the year 2000, when Mini started a new life under Bavaria Motor Works (BMW). Despite this, it is still viewed as a British car. BMW, much like Volkswagen with the Beetle, aimed to reinvent the Mini by injecting modernity and safety into this iconic vehicle. As a purist and fan of the original Mini, having owned a MK 5 1989 City model, I was curious about this transformation. The original Mini was the ideal budget car at the time, known for its easy handling and trademark 'go-kart' feeling.

BMW almost succeeded in creating a complete success. They built it well, and sales continue to thrive. However, the Mini is no longer a budget car. Fourteen years on, the Mini has garnered quite a following again, leading to the introduction of the 2015 Mini Cooper S.

Style

The design of the new Mini closely resembles the old, albeit with increasing dimensions over the years. Each new model release sees a slight increase in length, width, and wheelbase. The cheerful, quirky shape, with voluptuous curves and bright colors, keeps the Mini looking happy. However, by definition, the new Mini is not so 'mini' anymore!

Inside, circles dominate the design, a nod to the classic BMC models. There seems to be even more circles than before, creating a whimsical atmosphere reminiscent of a child playing with bubbles. The circular theme extends to the dash, center console, and door cards, keeping the spirit young.

Interior Materials and Finishing

2015 Mini Cooper S Interior Materials

Manufactured by BMW, the finish and materials in the Mini are commendable. While not on par with general BMWs, they are very close. I found little to criticize, except for some flexible plastic mirror guards in the sun visors. The durable plastics used throughout the car would be at home in any four-wheel drive. The leather seats and steering wheel feel luxurious, while buttons and switches provide a solid and satisfying operation.

Interior Space and Visibility

2015 Mini Cooper S Interior Space

The interior space has noticeably increased, thanks to BMW's adjustments. There is now more room for rear passengers and a larger boot space, making it more accommodating for friends. The front space remains cozy, with a cocoon-like feel. However, taller passengers may find their knees brushing against the seats in front, creating a slightly claustrophobic experience.

The visibility is excellent, essential for a fun car that requires quick reflexes. However, the blind spot remains a concern. While the mirrors provide a good field of view, checking the blind spot necessitates leaning forward due to the thick B-pillar, which can obstruct views.

Interior Technology and Options

2015 Mini Cooper S Technology Features

The 2015 Mini Cooper S is an exciting car to drive, retaining its fun heritage. However, it incorporates various technologies that may seem excessive for a car known for its go-kart feel.

Features include:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control with anti-collision distance warning
  • Advanced radio connectivity
  • Keyless entry system
  • Parking sensors
  • Eco-friendly driving mode

While the stereo by Harmon Kardon delivers crisp sound, the GPS system raises concerns about its update status, as it missed some newer roads.

Safety Features

The Mini Cooper S comes equipped with standard safety features, including:

  • Front and side airbags
  • Traction control
  • Anti-collision system

The Head-Up Display (HUD) shows speed and anti-collision warnings, but users should be cautious as it relies on GPS data, which may not always be accurate.

Power and Transmission

2015 Mini Cooper S Power and Transmission

The 2015 Mini Cooper S is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, delivering 192 bhp and 207 lb-ft of torque. According to Mini, it can reach 0-100 kph in 6.7 seconds with an automatic transmission, achieving a top speed of 233 kph.

BMW has developed three new engines featuring improved direct injection and Mini twin-turbo technology, but the diesel variant is not available in the Middle East. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is paired with a smooth 6-speed transmission.

While manufacturers often exaggerate performance figures, my experience was different. With a full tank, my wife, and camera gear onboard, I tested the Mini’s capabilities. In sport mode, the Mini accelerated impressively, clocking 0-100 kph in just 6.78 seconds.

Handling and Suspension

2015 Mini Cooper S Handling

The Mini Cooper S offers exceptional handling, reminiscent of a small dog eagerly chasing a ball. The car is eager to change direction, maintaining momentum and excitement at every turn.

BMW has enhanced the power, steering, damping, suspension, and brakes, integrating a new Dynamic Damper Control that adjusts to your driving style. The steering is precise, albeit slightly lacking in feedback, while the suspension feels firm and responsive. The brakes are progressive and sharp, working in conjunction with the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) and the new Cornering Brake Control (CDC).

Braking

2015 Mini Cooper S Braking

The braking performance of the Mini Cooper S is impressively sharp. The combination of its lightweight design and the Cornering Brake Control enhances stopping power, especially during late braking situations.

I tested the brakes and was able to stop from 100 kph in a swift 2.2 seconds, showcasing the Mini's ability to halt as effectively as it accelerates.

Verdict

The purists may see a larger, more functional car in the new Mini, but the fun and handling reminiscent of its heritage remain intact. For those seeking a modern hot hatch with advanced features, consider the Audi A1. If budget is a concern, the Citroen DS3 may be a better choice.

While the Mini has evolved, it risks drifting away from its cheeky roots. Despite the lack of budget-friendly pricing, the driving experience is delightful. However, the excessive technology might detract from its appeal. There’s a call for BMW to simplify the gadgets and focus on preserving the Mini's historic charm and fun driving experience.
