Salik in 2026: what your Dubai commute costs, and when a detour pays

A two-gate peak commute now costs AED 554.40 a month with VAT. Crossing before 06:00 on the way in halves that, but a toll-free detour only pays if it adds less than 20.5 km in a sedan.

Key Takeaways

  • A commute through two Salik gates each way at peak costs AED 554.40 a month over 22 working days, AED 26.40 more than before VAT.

  • Crossing the morning gates before 06:00 makes them free and cuts that bill to AED 277.20, a 50% saving.

  • Moving both legs off-peak, to 10:30 and 20:30, costs AED 369.60 a month, 33.3% less.

  • At September's AED 3.69 a litre, a toll-free detour pays only if it adds less than 20.5 km in a sedan or 13.7 km in an SUV for each peak gate you skip.

  • Our August guide's limits of 26 km and 17 km used April fuel and pre-VAT charges, and no longer hold.

The short answer: change when you cross before you change your route

Since 1 June 2026, every paid Salik crossing includes 5% VAT: AED 6.30 at peak and AED 4.20 off-peak or on Sunday, up from AED 6.00 and AED 4.00. Crossings between 01:00 and 06:00 stay free, and VAT does not apply to them.

For a typical commute through two gates each way, when you cross matters more than which road you take. Leaving before 06:00 halves the monthly bill, while a detour saves money only when it is short.

What your commute costs each month

Four peak crossings a day cost AED 25.20, or AED 554.40 over 22 working days. That is AED 26.40 a month more than before VAT, and AED 6,652.80 across 12 such months.

A school run plus the office, with 2 peak and 2 off-peak crossings, costs AED 21.00 a day and AED 462.00 a month. Heavy highway users with 8 peak crossings a day pay AED 50.40 a day, which comes to AED 1,108.80 a month.

Tip: Some gate pairs count once

Dubai has 10 active Salik gates, but passing Al Mamzar North and South, or Al Safa North and South, within one hour counts as a single journey fee.

Keep the same route but move both legs off-peak, crossing at 10:30 and returning at 20:30, and four crossings cost AED 369.60 a month. That is AED 184.80, or 33.3%, less than crossing at peak.

The bigger saving comes from starting early. Crossings before 06:00 are free, so leaving at 05:45 and returning at 17:00 means paying only for the return gates: AED 277.20 a month, half the peak bill and AED 3,326.40 less over 12 months.

If only part of your day can move, shifting two daily crossings from peak to off-peak still saves AED 92.40 a month.

Watch out: Check the charging windows

Peak charges apply from 6am to 10am and 4pm to 8pm, Monday to Saturday. Sunday is charged at the off-peak rate all day outside the free window, and Ramadan can change the windows.

When a toll-free detour is worth it

A detour pays only if the extra fuel costs less than the toll you skip. At the September 2026 Special 95 price of AED 3.69 a litre, a sedan averaging 12 km/L spends about AED 0.31 a kilometre, and an SUV at 8 km/L about AED 0.46.

A toll-free detour now pays over a shorter distance

So skipping one AED 6.30 peak gate is worth up to 20.5 km of extra driving in a sedan and 13.7 km in an SUV. For an off-peak gate the limits fall to 13.7 km and 9.1 km.

Sheikh Zayed Road changes the maths. A one-way peak trip past Jebel Ali, Al Barsha and Al Safa costs AED 18.90, so avoiding all three gates is worth up to 61.5 km in a sedan or 41 km in an SUV. That is why the toll-free Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311) and Emirates Road (E611) can pay off even when they add distance.

Smaller swaps help too. The Airport Tunnel gate can be avoided via Rebat Street, and Al Garhoud Bridge via Business Bay Crossing or Floating Bridge. From JVC, Meadows or Al Quoz, Al Khail Road can often cut a one-way trip to one gate or none.

Watch out: Our August guide's detour limits are out of date

It said skipping a peak gate is worth about 26 km in a sedan and 17 km in an SUV, using AED 6 tolls and an April fuel price of AED 2.78 a litre. Petrol is now 32.7% dearer and tolls include VAT, so the limits are 20.5 km and 13.7 km.

Stop your Salik account costing you more

  • Keep auto top-up on. VAT drains balances faster, and insufficient-funds fines cost far more than any toll.

  • Check exemptions. They cover military, police and emergency vehicles, RTA buses, school and college buses, and People of Determination vehicles.

  • Budget for the tag. Activating a Salik tag costs AED 52.50, and VAT applies to the fee.

What are Salik's peak hours?

How We Worked This Out

Charges and commute examples come from YallaMotor's Salik VAT explainer (June 2026); gate, route and timing examples come from our August 2026 toll guide, whose pre-VAT charges we replaced with VAT-inclusive ones. Monthly costs assume 22 working days and the same gates in both directions. Detour limits divide the toll by the fuel cost per kilometre at the official September 2026 Special 95 price of AED 3.69 a litre, using the guide's 12 km/L sedan and 8 km/L SUV; extra time is not costed. Abu Dhabi's Darb is not covered because our sources do not say how VAT applies to it.

Assumptions used in our calculations

  • Working days in a month: 22 days — Our Salik explainer's body and tables use 22 working days (X03).

  • Months counted for a yearly figure: 12 months — Twelve months of 22 working days each; public holidays and leave would lower the real total.
