Introduction
To address the shortage of adequate parking spaces for many residents and visitors in the emirate, Sharjah Municipality aims to add 5,000 new paid parking spaces by the end of the year. This ambitious goal follows the success achieved in 2018 when the municipality converted several sandy parking areas into suitable parking zones, creating 2,700 spaces.
Current Challenges
Currently, drivers are using unregulated free parking areas for extended periods, making it difficult for others to find parking. With the new paid parking system, drivers will be discouraged from occupying parking spots for long durations. The areas that Sharjah Municipality plans to address include:
- Al Nahda Commercial Area
New Parking Systems
Old parking machines will also be replaced with smart systems capable of capturing the license plates of parking violators as part of the new system. Although parking fees will be implemented in areas that previously offered free parking, Sharjah Municipality has clarified that the prices have been set based on three categories:
- Local Residents
- Business Owners
- Customers
Subscription and Payment Options
Drivers can enjoy an annual subscription option at a cost of 2,300 AED (approximately 191 AED per month) or choose to pay as they use through:
- Text message payments
- Parking machines
The monthly prices have been calculated to provide a much cheaper rate compared to private parking areas, which can charge up to 400 AED per month.
