Shell has played an interesting move. The leading oil company has decided to create a city car concept – that according to Shell – will revolutionize the industry. The concept car is a three seater (one seat in the front and two rear seats) city driver and as per the research conducted by independent agencies, the overall primary energy will be reduced by 34% at the end of the car’s lifecycle as compared to a regular automotive being used today in the United Kingdom. These are some huge numbers projected by the researchers.

The idea behind the Shell Concept Car is to change how vehicles are manufactured. Shell is using something called ‘co-engineering’ which basically means that the vehicle body, the engine and the lubricants used are created together in harmony. With this in-house development, the end product is bound to work in the most efficient manner possible. Moreover, the whole car making process also uses less energy as the materials etc are used carefully keeping the efficiency in mind. The Shell Concept car weighs just 550 kg and some of its components are created using 3D printers. The body is made of recycled carbon fiber. There is a modified version of the Shell Drive App being used in the car which basically provides information to the driver about their driving habits so that they can be improved.Â

Coming to the figures, as per the tests conducted, the Shell Concept Car achieves a fuel economy of 2.64 liters per 100 km moving at the speed of 50 km/h. This test includes both city and highway driving. The concept car was tested independently against the likes of petrol power and hybrid power cars. The car produced lower CO2 emission than both the competitors. Moreover, the special lubricant provided by Shell reduced CO2 emissions by 5% as compared to off-the-shelf motor oils.
