Toyota Launches Joint Research Program for Hydrogen Energy in the UAE
Program Details
Toyota Motor Corporation has initiated a joint research program with Masdar, ADNOC, Air Liquide, and Al-Futtaim Motors to explore the potential of hydrogen energy in the United Arab Emirates. As part of this program, Toyota will commence driving and refueling tests for its Mirai fuel cell vehicles in the UAE starting in May.
Program Objectives
Announced during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2017, the program aims to focus on key issues related to:
- Establishing a hydrogen-based community
- Hydrogen production
- Logistics
- Scalability and economic feasibility studies
Statements from Toyota's Chairman
Mr. Takashi Oshima, Chairman of Toyota Motor Corporation, stated: "The UAE has tremendous potential for expanding hydrogen production, with excess hydrogen production facilities in oil refineries, and its ability to generate hydrogen as a byproduct from caustic soda and other plants, in addition to the production capacity from large solar power stations."
Driving Tests
With the help of a hydrogen station set to be built in May, Toyota will conduct driving and refueling tests under extreme heat, dust, and other unique conditions. Additionally, Toyota will provide short-term contracts to government institutions and stakeholders to enhance understanding of fuel cell vehicles and hydrogen-based communities.
