Introduction

Michelin, a global leader in tire and rubber manufacturing, and General Motors, a giant in the automotive industry, have unveiled a new generation of airless tire technology with the prototype Uptis, which stands for "Unique Puncture-Proof Tire System." This innovative launch took place during the Movin’On summit focused on sustainable mobility.

General Motors plans to develop these airless tires in collaboration with Michelin, with the goal of integrating them into passenger vehicles starting in early 2024.

Testing and Development

Later this year, General Motors will begin actual testing of the Uptis prototype to assess its safety on its Michigan fleet of Chevrolet Bolt EV vehicles.

Official Comments

Steve Kiefer, Senior Vice President of Global Purchasing and Supply Chain at General Motors, commented: "We are extremely excited about the tremendous potential of the Uptis tire, and we are thrilled to partner with Michelin in advancing this cutting-edge technology. The Uptis tire is ideally positioned to drive the automotive industry into the future, serving as a great example of how our collaboration with suppliers can benefit our customers."

Environmental Benefits of the Uptis Tire

The airless design of the Uptis tire addresses common issues such as punctures and blowouts, leading to significant potential for reducing raw material usage and minimizing waste. This aligns with General Motors' vision for a world free of traffic accidents, carbon emissions, and congestion, as it:

  • Reduces the number of punctured or damaged tires discarded before the end of their lifecycle.
  • Lowers the consumption of raw materials and energy in the production process, while also reducing emissions associated with manufacturing spare and alternative tires, which are no longer necessary with this tire.
  • Lasts longer by eliminating uneven wear caused by overinflation or underinflation.

Additionally, it decreases the risks associated with tire punctures and blowouts.
