Volvo Opens Manufacturing Plant in Charleston
Volvo Cars, the luxury automobile manufacturer, has inaugurated its first plant in the United States, located in Charleston, South Carolina. This establishment solidifies its position as a global leader in the automotive industry.
New Manufacturing Strategy
The construction of this state-of-the-art facility aligns with Volvo Cars' global strategy titled "Manufacture Where You Sell."
Global Facilities
This facility integrates with other plants and an engine factory in Europe, alongside three car manufacturing plants and an engine facility in China, as well as assembly plants in India and Malaysia.
Production and Employment
The Charleston plant is set to begin production of the Volvo S60, a mid-size luxury sedan, starting from the fall of 2018. Beginning in 2021, the plant will also manufacture the next generation of the Volvo XC90, a luxury SUV.
Investment and Job Creation
Volvo Cars is investing approximately $1.1 billion in its manufacturing operations in the United States, which will create around 4,000 new jobs.

Shift Towards Electric Vehicles
Volvo plans to manufacture hybrid electric vehicles across all its global facilities. In 2017, Volvo Cars became the first global automaker to announce that starting in 2019, all new models will be electric.
