The mid-size/Crossover SUV segment is a flurry of action and a space of interest for many buyers. Crossover SUVs offer a flexible blend of practicality, comfort, decent on-road driving performance, pleasing exterior design, good interior features and great ergonomics. Perched within this segment are the legendary Honda Pilot and the famed Ford Explorer.

Where the Explorer looks butch with its more upright stance and aggressive styling, the lengthier Honda Pilot isn’t particularly exciting to look at. While the rear of the Explorer looks sporty and aggressive, the Pilot’s derriere is less characterful. Overall, the Ford Explorer manages to put across its SUV ambitions better than the safe and non-offensive design of the Honda Pilot.

With its wide and expansive windshield and beige interiors, the Japanese crossover’s cabin feels more capacious and it also offers captain seats for the second row; whilst the Explorer’s all black cabin feels sportier. The 2017 Ford Explorer is better equipped too, with more tech on offer such as Heated & Cooled front seats, 7 airbags, Blind Spot Warning and Rollover Stability Control to name a few.

The Ford Explorer is powered by a 3.5-litre V6 engine which makes 290hp and 346Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox and this means a 0-100 km/h time of 9 seconds and a top speed of 173 km/h. The Honda Pilot is also powered by a 3.5-litre V6, and this unit makes 280hp and 355Nm of torque. This is channelled via a 6-speed autobox to all four wheels and the Pilot gets to 100 km/h in 9.4 seconds, while its top speed is 175 km/h.

With a starting price of AED 129,900, the all-wheel drive Honda Pilot comes with decent equipment and for nearly AED 10,000 less than the Explorer. Although not as well equipped, it comes across as a better value-for-money proposition than its American rival.
