Aston Martin DBX: The Brand's First Ultra-Premium SUV
Introduction to the Aston Martin DBX
Joining the ultra-premium SUV segment, which is now home to the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, and Rolls-Royce Cullinan, Aston Martin’s first-ever SUV, the highly camouflaged DBX, begins testing in Wales, England.
Testing and Development
The DBX was put through its paces along a Welsh Rally stage by the company’s Chief Engineer, Matt Becker. This initial test signifies the start of an extensive real-world testing program for the British SUV. The DBX will be subjected to a punishing regime, facing some of the harshest environments including:
- The frozen Arctic
- The scorching deserts of the Middle East
- The highest Alpine passes
- The high-speed Nurburgring Nordschleife
Insights from Matt Becker
Speaking of his drive in the DBX development prototype, Aston Martin Chief Engineer, Matt Becker, stated: “We have already developed and tuned DBX in the driving simulator, which has enabled us to make excellent progress in advance of the first physical prototype cars being available. DBX is a very different kind of Aston Martin, but we will be testing it in all conditions and across all terrains to ensure it delivers a driving experience worthy of the wings badge.”
Unique Features of the DBX
The unique nature of the DBX in the Aston Martin line-up necessitates a series of new processes, procedures, and standards, as the brand extends into areas previously off-limits due to its sporting roots. These features include:
- Multi-terrain capabilities
- Towing capabilities suited for a state-of-the-art SUV
The DBX is scheduled to be unveiled in the last quarter of 2019 and will be built at the brand’s St Athan facility.
