2017 Volkswagen Tiguan Review: Features, Performance, and Design

The Volkswagen Tiguan, a portmanteau of the words Tiger and Leguan, is a compact crossover in the German brand’s line-up. Having debuted at the 2006 LA Auto Show, the Tiguan has developed a sizeable fan following since its concept car days.

The all-new second-generation model is a stunning vehicle that faces stiff competition from the likes of the Hyundai Tucson, Nissan X-Trail, and Toyota RAV4. Exterior
Serving as the ideal backdrop for the drive, the Late Baroque architecture of the city is a pleasant change from the skyscrapers of Dubai and aids in making the 2017 Tiguan stand out. Standing at 4,486mm long, 1,839mm wide, and 1,632mm tall, the all-new Tiguan is 60mm longer, 30mm wider, and 33mm shorter than its predecessor.
As the first SUV based on the modular transverse matrix (MQB) platform, it sets new standards in design, comfort, and functionality, while maintaining a strong bond to its Audi siblings.

Interior
Within the cabin, the abundant use of symmetrical contours exudes a futuristic aura and represents a significant leap over the outgoing model. The hexagonal A/C vents and pentagonal speaker housings inject character into the design.
Offering 29mm more legroom for rear occupants and an additional 145 liters of boot space, the interiors of the 2017 Tiguan are pleasing to the eye and comfortable. The digital instrument cluster, flanked by silver trim, provides a modern take on traditional equipment similar to Audi’s Virtual Cockpit.
Safety & Features
A quick glance at the spec sheet indicates that Volkswagen prioritized safety in the all-new Tiguan. The standard kit includes 7 airbags, post-collision braking, a Driver Alert System, and Adaptive Cruise Control in higher spec models.
For tech enthusiasts, the standout feature is an impressive 8-inch infotainment screen that offers iOS/Android connectivity, complemented by a superb 400-watt DYNAUDIO Surround Sound system.

Drive
The Volkswagen Tiguan 2017 features a compact 2.0-liter engine that produces a respectable 180 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque. The power is directed through a 7-speed DSG transmission to all four wheels, allowing for a towing capacity of 2,500 kg.
Although the driving position may not be as commanding as some may expect, the Tiguan is a solid offering. Having tested the compact SUV at speeds exceeding 180 km/h on the German autobahn, its stability and isolation impressed us, especially in the sub AED 100,000 price bracket.
For adventure seekers, the Tiguan includes intelligent off-road features, consuming only 7.4 liters per 100 kilometers, making it an efficient choice for off-road excursions.
Verdict
It takes a lot to impress a discerning automotive journalist, but the Volkswagen Tiguan 2017 does just that. Combining luxury and practicality seamlessly, the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan has become a new favorite for many.
