After testing out Audi A4 and Audi A5 Sportback, we got our hands on the mid-size executive Audi A6. It further confirmed our trust in consistent quality standards seen in Audi models.
Performance
The distinctive feel that only an Audi offers is evident from the moment you start the engine. The S tronic transmission, found only in Audi models, claims to make a gear change in 0.2 seconds. On our drive we found it was so instantaneous that it was impossible to feel any disruption to the power flow, making for consistently smooth driving.
The smooth ride was also helped in part by the adaptive cruise control, which we found responded well to other vehicles by slowing the car when necessary. While the Audi A6 was a joy to drive on long open roads it also fared better than expected in city environments. This is perhaps because despite its size (4.92 metres long and 1.87 metres wide) the drive is nevertheless light and responsive. Fuel economy, as usual for an Audi, is not the best in its class, but on balance this is made up for in other features.
Returning to dimensions, the relatively low height of the car (1.46 metres) in comparison to its length affords it an impressive silhouette that is both sporty and elegant.
Interior
As impressive as the car is from the outside, however, it cannot compete with the luxurious interiors, which are world class. There is one word of critique to get out of the way, however. While the car is perfectly comfortable for the driver and any passengers, the shape of the boot does make it difficult to store some suitcases, and trying to fit a twin stroller is impossible without folding the rear seat.
While a slightly stretched out boot would’ve been welcome, comfort and class are still two words that could have been created to describe the interiors of the Audi A6. From the leather steering wheel to the layered-wood veneer and glass sunroof, every aspect of this car has been designed with quality in mind.
It’s not just the use of quality materials that make this car comfortable, but also the thoughtful use of technology. Whether it’s the electric front seats (complete with memory function) or the use of the MMI (Multi Media Interface), no part of the driving experience has been overlooked.
This is particularly true when it comes to the specific demands that driving in the Middle East brings. The use of Arabic on the MMI and the extra power of the automatic air conditioning system are some of the more obvious changes, but there is also a heat-insulated windscreen, and sun blinds at the rear and side. Audi has tested the car for over 2.5 million km to ensure the car is capable of performing well in the environment of the Middle East. The wait, it appears, has been worth it.
Verdict
Certainly one of the best mid-size executive sedans we have driven, definitely gives tough competition to the likes of BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class.
