2018 BMW M5 Review

2018 BMW M5 Front

Before the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show, BMW unveiled the highly anticipated and controversial new BMW M5. This latest model has transitioned from a rear-wheel-drive system to an innovative all-wheel-drive setup. There's no doubt that the BMW denoted as F90 will make a mark in automotive history.

Performance and Power

The new M5 boasts immense power for a production car from BMW, featuring the latest version of the company's 4.4-liter V8 twin-turbocharged engine. This powerhouse generates an impressive 600 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque, paired with a ZF 8-speed transmission. With its all-wheel-drive configuration, the BMW M5 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.4 seconds and reach 200 km/h in 11.1 seconds, making it the fastest accelerating car in BMW's lineup to date.

Driving and Handling

Former Formula 1 driver and BMW pilot Timo Glock stated: "Thanks to the M xDrive system, the BMW M5 exceeded our expectations with its agility and driving precision, providing remarkable grip and control for both daily driving and on the track."

Speed and Driving Modes

The top speed of the 2018 M5 is 250 km/h, which can be increased to 305 km/h with the optional "M Drive" feature.

  • Driving modes include:
    • Dynamic Stability Control with all-wheel drive (4WD DSC)
    • Sport all-wheel drive (4WD Sport)
    • Rear-wheel drive (2WD)

These modes allow the M5 to transform from a track-ready performance machine to a bold driving experience in a matter of seconds.

2018 BMW M5 Side

BMW ensures that even in its simplest driving settings, the M5 provides a good level of slip. The "4WD Sport" mode adjusts the stability control system to dynamic driving mode, allowing for impressive rear-wheel drift and enhanced steering. When using the "2WD" mode, the front axle is completely disabled, delivering the ultimate driving experience for enthusiasts.
