2019 Mazda CX-3 Review: A Stylish Compact Crossover
Introduction to Mazda's Design Language
There is no doubt that Mazda’s design language in the past few years has evolved to be one of the best seen among Japanese car manufacturers.
KODO Design Language
The successful KODO design language that now runs across all Mazda vehicles is something other Japanese manufacturers have struggled to replicate for years. What makes it stand out is its originality, which works seamlessly across Mazda’s entire lineup, including sedans, crossovers, and SUVs.
Mazda CX-3 Overview
Today, we're discussing the Mazda CX-3, which retains the same design as last year's model. As the saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
The vehicle in review is the Mazda CX-3 GS, the lowest trim available in the UAE, priced at AED 77,000. Let’s explore what you get with this CX-3.
Exterior Design
The Mazda CX-3 retains its long hood, sporty lines, and large grille, giving it a presence that many rivals lack. While competitors in this segment often choose between traditional utilitarian designs or overly funky aesthetics, the Mazda CX-3 strikes a balance with its elegant, mature, and sporty appearance.
This elegant design is not diminished by the halogen headlights found on this trim. You still receive body-colored mirrors with side turn lamps, body-colored bumpers, door handles, and 16-inch alloy wheels.
Interior Features
Inside, the story shifts slightly. While the cabin showcases Mazda’s interior styling with rounded side AC vents, a sporty instrument cluster, and a dashboard-mounted infotainment control system, the designers seem to have an obsession with black. While black can be elegant, an all-black interior lacks contrast. A few more contrasting colors and materials would have enhanced the overall design.
The features on this lower trim of the CX-3 are impressive. Highlights include:
- Push-button start
- Sport drive mode selector
- Cruise control
- Electric parking brake with auto hold
- Audio system with Bluetooth connectivity, CD player, AUX jack, and USB charging port
- Traditional AC system
Keyless Entry Issue
One observation regarding the push-button start is the absence of keyless entry. With the CX-3, you must pull the key from your pocket to open the doors, only to find that the key is unnecessary to start the car. This contradicts the convenience that push-button start is meant to offer. It would be ideal if keyless entry accompanied push-button start, making the entry and starting process seamless.
Driving Experience
As is typical with Mazda, the driving experience is enjoyable but somewhat disappointing regarding power. The handling is excellent, making it fun to maneuver through corners, yet there’s always a lingering desire for more power.
The CX-3 is equipped with a 2.0L SKYACTIV-G engine that produces 148 HP and 192 NM of torque. This engine allows the compact crossover to accelerate to 100 KM/H in approximately 8.5 seconds, while maintaining decent fuel economy figures around 7.5 L/100 KM. This setup provides a smooth and playful ride, especially in sport mode where the 6-speed automatic transmission holds lower gears for a more engaging experience. However, there is always a feeling that a turbocharged option would enhance performance.
Conclusion
Overall, the Mazda CX-3 remains one of the most stylish compact crossovers in the market. This well-equipped vehicle is available in the UAE in four different trim levels: CX-3 GS, GT, GTL, and GTX, with prices starting from AED 77,000 to AED 103,000. While it may lack rear passenger space and require some power tuning, it should always be considered when looking for a compact crossover.
