The BMW 8 Series nameplate is one that BMW enthusiasts are well aware of. With its sights set on the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe, the Munich-based manufacturer plans to scrap the planned 9 Series and resurrect the 8 Series moniker.

Back in May, it was discovered that the German manufacturer had registered several nameplates, indicating models we can expect in the near future. Registered badges include but are not limited to:

Performance and Features
The BMW 8 Series, one of the last models to be built on the CLAR architecture currently underpinning the 3, 5, 6, and 7 Series models, is set to feature advanced technology from the 7 Series while being lighter and more agile than its S-Class rival.

As a direct consequence of the introduction of the BMW 8 Series, the 6 Series Gran Coupe will be eliminated from the line-up, with the Gran Coupe insignia being handed over to the upcoming 5 Series GT.
Future Prospects
Although a four-door 8 Series is not currently planned, due to fears of cannibalizing profits from the 7 Series, the Munich-based manufacturer’s line-up is in for a major overhaul.
