Test Drive Experience: Audi S3 and TT at Dubai Autodrome

Audi S3 and TT Test Drive

Audi Middle East held an exclusive event for the media to test drive the all-new Audi S3 and Audi TT at Dubai Autodrome (See prices of Audi TT). The event included activities such as:

  • Track drive
  • Cornering tests
  • Dynamics testing
  • City drive

The basic idea was to explain the importance of smaller engines and how they can be efficient as well as powerful in day-to-day driving. So without further ado, let’s look at both of these vehicles.

Audi S3 Sedan

Audi S3 Sedan

The Audi S3 is like any other Audi – some may find it generic or even plain dull. But that’s where Audi excels, as all their models bear the resemblance of an executive vehicle. Consider Audi the German equivalent of a Lexus; you don’t expect it to be mind-blowing, but it shouldn’t be undermined either. It has to be just right, and Audi does it again with the S3. They took an A3, lowered the suspension, and added four exhaust pipes to enhance its sportiness, resulting in a clean and understated sports saloon – typical Audi.

Audi S3 Interior

The story continues inside, where Audi has one of the most modern interiors in the market – functional yet simple. The all-black interior, with not-so-sporty seats, creates a comfortable space. It is designed to be driver-focused; however, the multitude of controls on the steering wheel can be overwhelming initially. Since this was a first drive event, I didn’t have much time to familiarize myself with the various buttons. Additionally, the hard plastic dashboard is disappointing for a German manufacturer, as such materials are typically expected from American or Japanese cars. The legroom is adequate for both rows, but rear headroom may be tight for tall individuals.

The smallest sedan offered by Audi has received the S treatment, and unsurprisingly, it performs exceptionally well. The new S3 shares the same platform as the all-new Volkswagen Golf (GTi and R) (See prices of GTi here). With a quattro drive, you get a typical Audi S car in a smaller package. The vehicle is powered by a 2.0 turbocharged engine, producing a remarkable 292 BHP and 380 Nm of torque. The result is a 0-100 sprint in less than 5.5 seconds. The fun doesn’t end there; Audi has included new exhaust valves that produce a grunt sure to make any car enthusiast smile. It doesn’t scream at high RPMs, which I appreciated the most. However, there is a noticeable amount of turbo lag, which is unavoidable. Audi has included a ‘boost’ gauge, adding an element of excitement as you wait for the turbo to spool, and once it does, the car accelerates instantly.

The gearbox is sublime for this segment, making me feel like playing with the gears constantly as the shifts are smooth. However, keep in mind that the car will change gears automatically even in manual mode once the RPM touches redline.

The activities for the S3 included dynamics testing, track, and leisure drive. After putting the car through its paces, I can confidently say that it is solidly built and remains composed most of the time. The heavy body keeps it planted on the tarmac, and the powerful engine provides an exciting experience while navigating corners. The quattro drive is the cherry on top, ensuring the car doesn’t lose traction; however, there is a bit of understeer, which is negligible.

Audi TT

Audi TT

The Audi TT has been around for quite a while, bringing good fortune to Audi. Since its inception, the TT has been the choice for those wanting a budget-friendly European sports car. The first iteration was a breakthrough in design, followed by a minor facelift that also worked well. To continue this success, Audi faced two main challenges: keeping the overall design similar to the previous generation while adding a modern twist. The resulting vehicle is nothing less than a marvel.

In my opinion, this is the best-looking TT yet. I would even argue it is the best-looking Audi in a long time. They have retained the original design while enhancing it by removing the bloated curves that made it look awkward. Instead, they replaced those curves with sleek edges, and the headlights complement this edgy appearance. Although the TT has typically been viewed as a more feminine car, this iteration appeals to a broader audience, including males. Even if it doesn't, the good news is that Audi has adopted the TT styling for the all-new upcoming R8, which will surely excite enthusiasts. We also know that the new R8 will feature laser headlights.

Audi TT Interior

Regarding the interior, it is simply magnificent. The new Audi cockpit is designed from the ground up, replacing the traditional dashboard with a 12.3” TFT display that is entirely customizable according to the driver’s preferences. This redesign allows for a cleaner center area of the dashboard, making it a pleasant environment. However, I would like to note that this new system takes some time to get used to, but it is highly intuitive and visually appealing. Overall, the interior is simple yet innovative.

Audi TT on the track

The all-new TT is powered by the same 2.0-liter engine, tuned to produce 227 BHP and 370 Nm of torque. Coupling that with AWD and shedding 200 kg compared to the S3 results in a true sports car. If you prefer numbers, the TT sprints from 0-100 in 5.3 seconds. In comparison, the Challenger SRT takes 5.0 seconds and is powered by a 6.4 V8. So, it’s all good news here. The quattro works exceptionally well on the track, especially in corners. However, the ride comfort isn’t on par with the S3 on the road. The sports suspension, along with sports seats, may not be ideal for daily driving. But for those who seek thrills in a compact coupe, the TT is a definite winner. The smaller dimensions and lightweight construction bring this car to life, and I experienced less turbo lag in the TT compared to the S3, which is acceptable. Audi has done justice to the TT brand, and customers are going to love it.

Verdict

After a long day of driving both the S3 and TT back-to-back on the track and road, it's clear that the TT is best suited for the track, while the S3 is more impressive on the road.
