Audi RS Q e-tron E2: The Hybrid Rally Monster Ready for Dakar 2023
Overview of the Audi RS Q e-tron
Remember the Audi RS Q e-tron? This rally monster won its first desert rally in Abu Dhabi back in March 2022 and had an impressive debut at Dakar 2022 in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, although it faced a series of mechanical problems and incidents.
Audi's Return to Dakar 2023
Now, Audi is set to return to Dakar 2023 with the RS Q e-tron E2. This model is essentially the Q e-tron turned up to 11, with the ‘E2’ suffix paying homage to the second-generation versions of the 1980s Group B Audi Quattro.
Innovative Hybrid System
The hybrid system of the e-tron E2 is highly innovative. The 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, derived from the German brand’s DTM touring car racer, assists the 52kWh liquid-cooled battery to generate energy and power this impressive rally car over challenging dunes.
Exterior Upgrades
In terms of exterior upgrades, the RS Q e-tron E2 features a redesigned front and rear hood along with completely new bodywork. Audi worked diligently to reduce the fabric layers of the composite body, thereby reducing weight.
Aerodynamics and Efficiency
All changes to the bodywork were made with better aerodynamics in mind. The reworked body gives the e-tron E2 a 15 percent improvement in aerodynamics, which consequently enhances battery efficiency.
Dimensions and Cabin Improvements
At 4670mm long, 2300mm high, and 1950mm wide, the e-tron E2 is 170mm longer than its predecessor. Improvements have also been made to the cabin, featuring a larger cockpit with a new rotary switch that provides access to four groups of controls.
New Rally Beast
In truth, the e-tron E2 is a brand new rally beast, sharing little in common with its predecessor. This point was emphasized by Axel Löffler, Chief Designer of the RS Q e-tron, who stated, “The Audi RS Q e-tron E2 does not take a single body part from its predecessor.” He also noted, “The aerodynamic aspect should not be underestimated in desert rallying.”
Preparations for Dakar 2023
The Audi Sport team will begin preparations for the 2023 Dakar Rally this month in Morocco.
