Nissan recently announced that its Serena mini-van, which is scheduled to go on sale in Japan in late August, will be equipped with the brand’s ProPILOT technology.

ProPILOT, an autonomous drive technology, is designed for use on the highway and in single-lane traffic. Pioneering the concept, Nissan is the first Japanese automaker to implement a system which controls all, steering, acceleration and braking, fully automatically. The main aim of ProPILOT, is to reduce driver fatigue during heavy traffic and long commutes.

Activated through a switch on the steering wheel, ProPILOT utilizes advanced image-processing technology to control the accelerator, brakes and steering based on inputs received from the mono camera. The mono camera is able to recognize in three-dimensional depth both, vehicles ahead and lane markers.

Once activated, ProPILOT automatically controls the distance between the vehicle and the preceding vehicle, using a speed preset by the driver (between approximately 30 km/h and 100 km/h). The autonomous drive system, also keeps the car in the middle of the lane by reading lane markers and controlling steering, even on the bends.

When the preceding vehicle stops, the ProPILOT system brings the car to a complete stop. Once the driver is ready to resume driving, they may do so by lightly pressing the accelerator or resuming the system through the steering wheel.

While there’s a decent amount of time before the system is launched in the Middle East, Nissan already has plans of introducing ProPILOT in Europe by 2017. Plans to improve ProPILOT to a multi-lane autonomous technology, are also on the cards by 2018.
