2013 Range Rover Sport Review - Performance, Features, and Fuel Economy

This year has seen the 2013 Range Rover Sport include even more innovative features, including a powered tailgate. We drove the Sport HSE version and were not disappointed, to say the least!

On The Road

The Range Rover Sport is a very attractive vehicle (although the boxy shape could add some more curves), while the technical specifications are amongst the best.

Handling it on the road shows how those specifications make for a smooth and powerful drive. While it is undoubtedly a 4 x 4 vehicle, suitable for driving off-road, it also displays some of the best characteristics of a sedan, with amazingly powerful acceleration. The dashboard display is well-laid out and makes for easy visualization and absorption of relevant information.

Beneath The Hood

The 5.0 LR-V8 engine is a leader in its class, featuring:

• 510PS at 6,000-6,500rpm
• 625Nm of torque at 2,500-5,500rpm
• 348g of CO2 per kilometre

The naturally aspirated engine option is powerful, yet refined, featuring:

• 375PS at 6,500rpm
• 510Nm at 3,500rpm
• 327g of CO2 per kilometre

The 6-speed ZF HP28 automatic transmission allows for an economical, yet high-performing vehicle. It is responsive, refined, and rapid, carefully optimized to work with the Range Rover Sport engines. For some, a manual transmission may be preferable for fuel economy and control reasons, but the 6-speed ZF HP28 may make a few more converts to automatic. Those who want more involvement with driving will enjoy the functionality of the variable ratio steering rack and the Roll Stability Control system.

The 2013 Range Rover Sport makes use of variable torque-actuated camshaft timing, which uses less energy than traditional oil-pressure systems. The addition of the new Hill Start Assist and Gradient Acceleration Control systems enhances the off-road ability of the vehicle.

Information and Entertainment

The peripherals have also been stepped up a notch. Audio systems are now delivered with Gen 2.1 electrical architecture, meaning that 825W of power can be delivered for a premium audio experience with the Premium Harmon Kardon LOGIC 7's 17 speakers. The addition of wireless technology from WhiteFire allows for better entertainment and engagement in the rear seats, with a 7-inch touchscreen and Dual View technology bringing even more accessibility and possibilities.

Fuel Economy and Green Credentials

Fuel economy and a reduction in emissions of CO2 are major attributes of the 2013 Range Rover Sport's design and features. Key contributions to fuel economy include:

• Engine optimization
• Low-friction elements in the engine
• A fast warm-up with advancements in the cooling system
• A low-slip torque converter
• The ability to achieve a higher torque with a lower rpm

In addition, the Range Rover Sport features the Intelligent Power Management System. This allows for a number of fuel-saving features such as Smart Regenerative Charging to ensure that battery charging takes place at the most efficient time.

Verdict

The Range Rover Sport offers impressive technical specifications as well as innovative fuel economy technology and great entertainment options. All in all, it is an impressive model, with the functionality of a 4 x 4 and the acceleration of a powerful sedan.
