Introduction to BMW

Headquartered in Munich, Germany, BMW is one of the oldest and most popular brands in the world. Founded in 1916, BMW began its journey as Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG, specializing in six-cylinder aircraft engines for the German air force during World War I. In 1922, the name was changed to Bayerische Motorenwerke (BMW) as the company shifted focus to manufacturing motorcycle engines and brakes for railway carriages and locomotives.

Early Years and Growth

Just a year after the renaming, BMW introduced its very first motorcycle, the R32, in 1923. The company progressed to building its first car in the late 1920s with the launch of the BMW 3/15, a rebadged version of the British Austin Sevens. However, with the impending World War II, BMW returned to producing aircraft engines alongside motorcycles and cars for the German Luftwaffe.

Post-War Survival and Success

After the war, with many factories in ruins from Allied bombings, BMW survived by manufacturing bicycles and kitchen utensils. Today, Bayerische Motorenwerke, or Bavarian Motor Works, is one of the most prominent automobile brands globally, producing some of the most desirable cars in every market it operates in.

BMW Motorrad and Motorsports

BMW continues to produce motorcycles under the BMW Motorrad division, which have garnered a dedicated audience. The company has also made significant contributions to motorsports, participating in events like Formula One, Dakar Rally, Le Mans, Touring Car Championship, and the notorious Isle of Man TT.
