2013 Chevrolet Trailblazer Review: A Family-Friendly Mid-Size SUV

The Chevrolet Trailblazer is one of the rare mid-size SUVs that effectively combines off-road capabilities with essential family SUV features. While some SUVs are designed primarily for family duties, like the Nissan Pathfinder, others, like the Jeep Wrangler, focus more on off-road performance. The Trailblazer stands out for its blend of decent off-road capabilities and a range of comfort and safety features that make it an excellent family vehicle.
Driving Performance
We took the Chevrolet Trailblazer to Fossil Rock, located off the Dubai-Hatta highway, to evaluate its performance in actual desert dunes. The Trailblazer performed admirably, equipped with a separate transfer case that allows a distinct set of gears for off-roading. This feature is a key indicator of a vehicle's seriousness about off-road capabilities.
Key driving performance features include:
- Engine Power: 236 HP V6 engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.
- Off-Road Statistics: Comparable to the Mitsubishi Pajero in ground clearance, departure angles, and approach angles.
- On-Road Comfort: Smooth driving experience with car-like handling.
- Seating Capacity: 7-seater SUV, larger than 5-seater models like the Volkswagen Tiguan.
However, the Trailblazer does lack some modern features, such as adaptive cruise control and a Blind Spot Warning System, which are available in competitors like the Ford Explorer and Dodge Durango.
Interior

The interior of the Chevrolet Trailblazer is distinctly American, offering comfort and advanced technology:
- Safety Features: Equipped with 6 airbags and a Theft Deterrent System to enhance family safety.
- Sound System: Premium 6-8 speaker audio system for an enjoyable ride.
- Touch Screen: Multi-use touchscreen that includes a Driver Information Center console.
- Cargo Space: Above-average cargo space when the third row is folded down, though limited with all seats upright.
- Legroom: Impressive 815mm legroom in the third row, allowing comfortable seating for all passengers.
One area for improvement is the radio station tuning system, which has been reported to be challenging to operate in urban areas.
Verdict
The 2013 Chevrolet Trailblazer is a versatile SUV that caters to both family on-road driving and decent off-road dune bashing. It boasts above-average safety and comfort features. While it competes strongly with the Mitsubishi Pajero in overall SUV performance, it faces competition from the more family-oriented Ford Explorer and Dodge Durango.
