2017 Kia Optima Hybrid: Design, Technology, and Enhancements
Kia has unveiled the 2017 Kia Optima Hybrid (HEV) at the Chicago Auto Show. The new vehicle retains the distinctive interior and exterior design of the standard Optima while featuring a hybrid engine that improves fuel efficiency by 10% compared to the previous Optima hybrid model.
Engine and Performance
The 2.4-liter engine has been replaced with a more efficient 2.0-liter GDI engine, equipped with four cylinders and producing 154 horsepower, paired with a 38-kilowatt hybrid electric motor, and an enhanced six-speed transmission. Together, these engines generate a combined output of 193 horsepower at 6,000 RPM. The fourth generation of the completely redesigned Optima Hybrid has achieved a 10% improvement in fuel consumption compared to the previous model.
The new vehicle features a lighter, more compact electric motor along with a high-density lithium polymer battery that has increased capacity by 13%, now reaching 1.62 kilowatt-hours. Additionally, it includes systems that assist in fuel savings by providing guidance to the driver on optimal driving techniques.
Technology Systems
The new Eco-DAS system (Driver Assistance System) introduces the Coasting Guide for the first time from Kia. This technology aims to enhance fuel efficiency by guiding the driver on braking through an icon on the dashboard that flashes for four seconds, accompanied by an audible alert.
The system also includes:
- Active grille shutters that open and close based on speed.
- Improved aerodynamics through engine cooling.
- New rear bumper and aerodynamic alloy wheels.
- LED lights and exclusive "EcoHybrid" badges.
Safety and Comfort Features
The new hybrid Optima is equipped with numerous intelligent technologies and comfort features, including:
- Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB).
- Blind Spot Detection System (BSD).
- Smart Adaptive Cruise Control (ASCC).
- Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS).
- Forward Collision Warning System (FCWS).
It also offers a smart key access system for the trunk, allowing for hands-free operation, a wireless charger for smartphones, and a Surround View Monitor (SVM) for enhanced parking assistance.
Entertainment Technology
The Optima Hybrid also features an advanced system that allows drivers to access essential smartphone functions (UVO3) with support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It is equipped with 10 high-quality Harman Kardon speakers, Clari-Fi™ technology, and a 630-watt digital amplifier to enhance music sound quality within the cabin.
