By far the most iconic two seat coupe in the world is the Mazda MX-5. With over 1 million units sold since production, the MX-5 has become the biggest selling two seater roadster in the world. Who knew that this little thing could become such a phenomena. Well, Mazda kept it simple with the principles. The car will have 2 seats; it will be a rear-wheel drive; it will have the engine at the front and the gearbox became optional. The best part about the Mazda MX-5 is its cheap and fun. It wasn’t meant to do the fastest lap times or have gazillion horsepower. NO. The Mazda MX-5 was about one thing and one thing only – the drive. It is the most adored driver’s car by enthusiasts and regular folks together.Â
The newest generation Mazda MX-5 was unveiled last year and we are still waiting for it to come to this side of the world. The new MX-5 has upgraded power and suspension in addition to a meaner look and bit increase in size. The engine choices for the MX-5 include the 1.5 liter engine producing 130 BHP and the 2.0 liter engine producing 158 BHP. These high revving engines are mated to either a six-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission. The MX-5 is still a rear wheel drive with the engine at the front. Most probably, only the 2.0 liter engine will debut in the GCC.
Coming to the New York Auto Show, Mazda has released another variant of the MX-5 called the MX-5 RF where RF is short for Retractable Fastback. From the name as well as the looks, the MX-5 RF has the targa top which can fold automatically as compared to the roadster model which has a manually foldable fabric roof. The good part is that the boot space is the same for both the roadster and the targa even though the targa roof folds into the boot. The roof can open or close even while running at a speed of under 10 km/h. The RF will have a special paint and will be available in the market by early 2017.
