Aston Martin Rapide AMR Review: Performance, Handling, and Design

Aston Martin Rapid AMR

Say hello to the Aston Martin Rapide AMR. You might be wondering why I am asking you to say hello to a car that is technically ten years old.

You are right; the Rapide is ten years old. Introduced in 2010, it is Aston Martin's first four-door car after the Lagonda. The Rapide is based on a stretched DB9 platform. The Rapide AMR is the last car from Aston Martin to be based on the VH aluminum platform.

Performance

This is not just any Rapide; this is the Rapide AMR. For those unfamiliar, AMR stands for Aston Martin Racing.

Let's dive into its performance. The Rapide AMR is equipped with a powerful 6.0-liter V12 engine producing 580 HP, sending all of this power to the rear wheels via an 8-speed gearbox.

It accelerates from 0-100 kph/0-62 mph in a staggering 4.1 seconds, with a top speed of 330 kph/205 mph. Considering this is a four-door family car, it ventures into supercar territory—a remarkable feat for a ten-year-old vehicle.

The Rapide AMR leaps forward like a cheetah on the hunt. The kickback is intense, demanding your full attention when you floor it, especially in a drag race against a Ferrari.

The driving experience is analog and engaging. The Rapide AMR communicates with you through the steering, pedals, gear shifters, and seat, inviting you to be part of the driving experience.

When you get the gear changes right, the car rewards you with exhilarating engine and exhaust sounds. This car begs for open roads where you can unleash its power and hear the engine's melody.

Handling

Aston Martin Rapide AMR

Weighing in at 1990 kg (4387 lbs), the Rapide AMR doesn't feel heavy or bloated. It features old-school rack & pinion steering that is light and precise.

With minimal body roll, the car feels responsive. It’s like having Aladdin's Genie at your fingertips; you steer where you want to go, and the car obeys your commands.

Overall, it handles exceptionally well for its size and weight, with minimal electronic interference. The Aston Martin Rapide AMR truly shines during fast corners and sweeping bends.

Looks

The Rapide received a facelift in 2013, followed by improvements in 2015. Today, it looks fresh and modern, especially in AMR guise. It boasts an aggressive stance, sitting low on massive 21-inch wheels, featuring a carbon fiber bonnet with cooling vents for the V12.

With a front lower lip spoiler, side skirts, and a rear boot spoiler, it strikes a perfect balance between aggressiveness and elegance.

This car is a head-turner. While navigating traffic, people will glance at it, often turning back for a second look. I even had a young boy walk alongside for 15 minutes, mesmerized by the car. This is what such cars are designed to do—aspire, inspire, and become wallpaper material.

The Rapide AMR is available in three design schemes. The Standard and Silhouette schemes offer four colors: Mariana Blue, Scintilla Silver, Lightning Silver, and Onyx Black, all with AMR Lime accents. The Silhouette scheme replaces the Lime accents with a full-length contrasting stripe.

The Signature scheme pairs Stirling Green paint with Lime accents and a Lime stripe. All designs draw inspiration from AMR Racing livery, with the Signature scheme being the closest representation.

My car featured the Mariana Blue with Lime Green accents, and I fell in love with it instantly.

Interiors

Rapide AMR

The interior reveals the car's age, with a center console entirely made of carbon fiber. While the infotainment screen may seem outdated, it does offer modern features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

A charming old Aston feature remains; you must insert the key into the center console to start the engine, enhancing your connection with the driving experience.

The Rapide AMR can be equipped with an optional steering wheel from the Aston Martin One-77. My press car had this feature, and my feelings about the design are mixed.

The entire interior is draped in Alcantara, providing a superb tactile experience. Lime green accents throughout add character.

The Bang & Olufsen stereo system is exceptional. Overall, it’s an enjoyable car to be in, and you quickly forget about the dated interiors once you start driving.

Being a four-door car, I must mention the rear seats. As someone of average height, I found it challenging to get in and out of the back. While suitable for short distances, they are best for kids.

Verdict

Rapide AMR

The Aston Martin Rapide AMR is not your everyday car. Priced around $300,000, it has become something special and rare. With the rise of EVs and hybrids, cars like this will be cherished. Aston Martin is moving away from the V12, favoring hybrid V6s for future models, making the Rapide AMR highly collectible. It marks the end of an era, with only 210 units set to be built.
