Driving Ban in Abu Dhabi: 489 Drivers Penalized for Traffic Violations
Actions Taken
The traffic authorities in Abu Dhabi have taken necessary measures to ban 489 drivers from operating vehicles for three months in the UAE. Between September 1 and September 30, 2016, the Abu Dhabi Traffic Police confiscated the licenses of drivers who accumulated more than 24 black points due to various violations, including:
- Improper lane changes
- Speeding violations
Warnings for Offenders
Following the temporary ban and confiscation of licenses, Major General Ahmed Abdullah Al Shahi, Deputy Director of the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police, has reminded those whose licenses were confiscated not to operate any vehicle during the ban period.
Penalties Imposed
He stated that any driver prohibited from driving by court order or licensing authority will face imprisonment for up to three months, along with a fine of no less than 5,000 AED. This is in accordance with the traffic points system under Article 50 of Federal Law No. 21 of 1995, as amended by Federal Law No. 12 of 2007.
Traffic Violations and Black Points
Under federal law, 72 traffic violations have been recorded, each carrying associated black points and fines. For instance, drivers running a red light will incur 8 black points and a significant monetary penalty.
Immediate License Confiscation Cases
Drivers exhibiting reckless behavior that endangers others' lives will receive 12 black points, in addition to speeding violations. Immediate confiscation of a driving license occurs in cases such as:
- Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Operating a vehicle without a number plate
- Fleeing the scene of an accident that resulted in injuries
Consequences of Black Points
A total of 24 black points will lead to the confiscation of the driving license, the vehicle, and monetary fines.
