Following the horrific accident that led to the death of four individuals street racing in Al Ain, Police across the UAE are warning motorists against reckless driving during the holy month of Ramadan. The accident that took place on the fourth day of Ramadan, involved two motorists racing against each other and running over two women who were crossing the road from a designated area.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai Police warned that motorists caught street racing will be heavily penalized with a fine worth AED 2,000, 23 black points, and have their vehicle impounded for 60 days. Under the UAE’s traffic law, it is also illegal to modify a vehicle’s engine or chassis without appropriate approval. Individuals who modify their vehicle without approval from the authorities will be fined AED 1,000, given 12 black points, and have their vehicle impounded for 30 days.

Traffic police said that young drivers tend to race against each other on highways and within residential areas, endangering themselves, other motorists, and the lives of pedestrians too. The Police also pointed out that especially during Ramadan, street races happen late at night and into the early morning.
