UAE Police Warning Against Street Racing During Ramadan
Following the horrific accident that led to the death of four individuals during street racing in Al Ain, police across the UAE are warning motorists against reckless driving during the holy month of Ramadan. The accident, which occurred on the fourth day of Ramadan, involved two motorists racing against each other and running over two women who were crossing the road from a designated area.
Penalties for Street Racing
Abu Dhabi and Dubai Police warned that motorists caught street racing will face severe penalties, including:
- Fine: AED 2,000
- Black Points: 23 points
- Vehicle Impoundment: 60 days
Under the UAE’s traffic law, it is also illegal to modify a vehicle’s engine or chassis without appropriate approval. Individuals who modify their vehicle without authorization will incur:
- Fine: AED 1,000
- Black Points: 12 points
- Vehicle Impoundment: 30 days
Increased Risks During Ramadan
Traffic police stated that young drivers often engage in racing on highways and within residential areas, endangering themselves, other motorists, and pedestrians. The police also highlighted that street races tend to occur late at night and into the early morning, especially during Ramadan.
