Audi e-tron: Audi's First All-Electric Vehicle
Introduction to the Audi e-tron
Electric cars are becoming increasingly popular, and Audi has joined the movement with the introduction of the e-tron, its first all-electric vehicle. This leap follows the announcement of the Mercedes-Benz EQC. The e-tron aims to compete in a market dominated by the likes of the Tesla Model X and Jaguar I-Pace.
Dimensions and Design
Launched in Abu Dhabi, the e-tron boasts dimensions that place it between the Q5 and Q7, measuring 4,901mm long, 1,935mm wide, and 1,616mm tall. Key design features include:
- New grille with five distinct slats for battery cooling
- Subtle horizontal bars in the headlights
- Revolutionary digital side mirrors
Interior Features
Inside, the e-tron features two large MMI touch response displays reminiscent of the all-new Audi A8 and Q8. This new system replaces nearly all conventional switches and controls, providing:
- Extensive customization options
- Natural voice control for tasks
For instance, simply saying "I’m cold" adjusts the A/C system, while "I’m hungry for Italian" directs navigation to local Italian restaurants.
Performance and Technology
The e-tron is powered by a hidden 95kWh battery pack that generates 400 horsepower and 665 Nm of torque. Unique to this model, the Quattro all-wheel-drive system features an electric motor on each axle, allowing for:
- 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in 5.7 seconds
- Electronically limited top speed of 200 km/h
The e-tron prioritizes comfort over sportiness, offering seven driving modes that adjust air suspension, traction control, and transmission settings for an effortless driving experience.
Charging and Battery Life
Thanks to its aerodynamic design and advanced regenerative braking system, the e-tron delivers up to 400 kilometers per charge. Charging costs in the UAE range from AED 13 to AED 26, making it significantly cheaper than petrol. Audi also offers an 8-year/160,000 km warranty for the battery, alleviating concerns about battery longevity and replacement costs.
Pricing and Conclusion
Deliveries of the Audi e-tron are expected to begin in the third quarter of 2019, with pricing projected around AED 380,000, similar to the Q8. The e-tron offers a seamless transition to electric vehicle ownership, combining the appearance, feel, and driving experience of a traditional car with the benefits of an EV.
