Audi S6 Review: A Powerful Luxury Saloon

Audi S6 Exterior

The Audi S6 is a significant upgrade from the standard A6. While it retains all the features of the base model, it introduces a remarkable 4.0 twin-turbo V8 that transforms the driving experience.

On the Outside

The Audi A6 has always had a more understated appearance. Many buyers gravitate towards the A5 or the pricier A7 in search of a more visually striking Audi.

The S6 doesn’t dramatically alter the aesthetic of the range. Key differences include:

  • S-line specific alloys
  • A subtle front bumper redesign
  • Quad exhausts integrated into a mini-diffuser at the rear

It could easily be mistaken for the standard model. The ‘S’ badge on the front grille, the boot lid, and 'V8 T' badges on the flanks provide minimal distinction, alongside the ‘S6’ brake calipers.

This understated design can be a double-edged sword. For those desiring a flashy statement car, the S6 may disappoint. However, for enthusiasts seeking a sleeper that combines subtlety with impressive performance, the Audi S6 is an exceptional choice.

In our test car's Ibis White, the S6 presents a handsome, well-proportioned look. The new LED lights add a broody touch, and a darker color could enhance its menacing appearance.

On the Inside

Audi S6 Interior

The interior is where the S6 truly shines. Audi is renowned for its interiors, and the S6 is among the finest examples.

Comparatively, the Mercedes E500 and BMW 550i offer excellent interiors, yet they can feel like base models. In contrast, the S6 unmistakably exudes luxury:

  • S6 badges on the dials
  • Exquisite speedometer and rev gauge
  • Diamond quilted leather seats
  • Real carbon fiber surfaces

With a base price of AED 299,000 (including a 3-year warranty and 5-year service contract), the S6 comes equipped with:

  • Premium Bose sound system
  • Navigation system
  • Audi’s MMI infotainment system
  • Cruise control
  • Electric rear sunblind
  • Reverse camera and sensors
  • Electric boot lid
  • Ambient lighting
  • Glass sunroof
  • Memory sports seats

Optional features on our test car included soft-close doors and a surround camera system, raising the total to just over AED 315,000, which remains reasonable.

Though the paddles behind the steering wheel are small, the driving position is adjustable and well-suited for various preferences. The S6’s interior feels significantly more luxurious than its price suggests.

To Drive

With 420bhp and 550Nm of torque, the S6 promises exhilarating performance. The Quattro system ensures that all power is efficiently transferred to the road, achieving 0-100 km/h in approximately 4.5 seconds, rivaling the likes of a Porsche 911 or Aston Martin V8 Vantage.

The V8 engine, a slightly detuned variant from the Bentley Continental GT V8, is at the heart of the S6’s appeal. Mated to a dual-clutch S-tronic transmission, it adapts seamlessly to both leisurely drives and spirited accelerations.

One of the S6’s highlights is its minimal turbo lag, allowing for responsive acceleration that keeps the driver engaged. However, the thrill of unleashing its full potential is often hampered by urban driving restrictions.

Audi’s MMI system permits customization of settings for the engine, transmission, steering, suspension, and exhaust note. Opting for the dynamic exhaust setting enhances the sound inside the cabin, providing a gratifying auditory experience.

However, when pushing the S6 through corners, the driving experience can falter. Despite a well-weighted steering feel, the car tends to understeer, which can be frustrating compared to competitors like BMW that offer a more balanced handling experience.

Additionally, the S6's brakes could be more responsive. When accelerating quickly, effective braking is crucial, and the S6's brakes lack the confidence-inspiring feel expected in a performance vehicle.

Despite these shortcomings, the S6 excels in everyday driving. When left in auto mode, the ride remains comfortable, making highway cruising a pleasurable experience. However, the S6 is best enjoyed at a moderate pace rather than pushed to its limits.

Conclusion

The Audi S6 makes a compelling case as a fast luxury saloon. Its interior is exquisite, offering a sense of occasion every time you step inside. The powerful engine ensures effortless overtaking and exhilarating drives.

However, while the S6 can outpace sports cars in a straight line, it struggles with cornering dynamics. The Quattro system provides all-weather confidence but may not be necessary in regions with mild weather conditions.

If you're seeking a car that feels premium and delivers impressive performance, the S6 is a great option at a seemingly competitive price. Just don’t expect sports-car handling, as that may lead to disappointment.
