Introduction

Some things are not measured by their aesthetic appeal, but rather by their practicality for the tasks they are designed to perform. The Volkswagen Teramont is a prime example of this. In this review, we will delve deeper into Volkswagen's first seven-passenger SUV and explore the practicality it offers for its occupants.

Vehicle Overview

The Volkswagen Teramont, known as the Atlas in the American market, is manufactured in the USA and is positioned between the Volkswagen Tiguan and Touareg in terms of pricing. Although it is larger than the Touareg, it is designed to be a family-friendly SUV, boasting significant practicality and comfort, all at competitive prices in its category.

Exterior Design

Rather than embracing modern designs with curved and prominent lines, Volkswagen opted for straight lines in the Teramont's design, providing clarity to its dimensions, which measure nearly 5 meters in length and 1.9 meters in width. While this design may not be the most visually appealing in its class—especially when compared to the Mazda CX-9—the Teramont compensates for its design shortcomings with exceptional practicality and a wealth of features.

The Teramont comes equipped with full LED lighting up front, daytime running lights, fog lamps, 20-inch alloy wheels, and a power liftgate that opens hands-free.

Interior Design

The interior design of the Teramont may seem a bit bland, despite incorporating leather accents in certain areas of the cabin, such as leather seats with electric controls, heating, and cooling options. However, to keep the Teramont competitively priced, many lightweight plastics are used throughout the cabin.

What cannot be denied is the feeling of familiarity within the cabin, even though it differs from other Volkswagen vehicles. Everything inside is user-friendly, and all buttons are clearly labeled, allowing you to become accustomed to them quickly.

Features and Technology

Volkswagen Teramont 2019 Review

As expected from Volkswagen, the Teramont is loaded with numerous high-quality features, including an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, a 12-speaker Fender audio system, and support for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The same screen also features 360-degree cameras around the vehicle, along with a remarkable automated parking system.

It is also equipped with a tri-zone automatic climate control system, air vents for all passengers, adaptive cruise control with radar, a blind-spot monitoring system, and a full panoramic sunroof.

In the rear, the true highlight of the Teramont is the spaciousness it offers, particularly in the second-row seating, which can comfortably accommodate three adults with dedicated climate control and USB charging ports, as well as heated seats. The third row can also comfortably fit two adults.

The trunk space starts from 583 liters and expands to 2741 liters when the rear seats are folded down, and Volkswagen takes pride in offering 17 cup holders throughout the interior.

Driving Experience

Volkswagen Teramont 2019 Interior Drive Mode

The new Teramont comes with two engine options: a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine producing 220 horsepower and 350 Nm of torque, and a 3.6-liter V6 engine, which is fitted in our test vehicle, generating 280 horsepower and 360 Nm of torque.

All Teramont models are equipped with Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, featuring four settings for different terrains: slippery roads, paved roads, off-road, and off-road custom, where you can customize the settings to your liking. Additionally, there are four driving modes: Normal, Eco, Sport, and Sport Custom.

The Teramont is known for its speed, capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8 seconds. However, this acceleration may not feel as pronounced due to its weight and size. This size affects its handling; you may notice some body roll in corners and a light steering feel even in Sport mode. Nevertheless, this is not a major concern since it is primarily a family vehicle designed to meet practical needs effectively.

Conclusion

The new Teramont is not just another addition to Volkswagen's lineup; it is a distinctive option in the family SUV segment. This versatile vehicle emphasizes spaciousness and practicality, offering everything one would expect from the renowned German manufacturer in terms of features and quality, all at competitive prices, with the fully loaded version in the UAE priced at 196,000 AED.
