Corvette ZR1X and ZR1 Break Nürburgring Record, Hold Fastest American Car Title
Tags:

Chevrolet has formally re-set the standard for American performance vehicles at Nürburgring. In an ongoing campaign, the hybrid ZR1X and its internal combustion counterpart, the ZR1, posted new lap times that surpassed all prior US-manufactured challengers on the famous Nordschleife.
The ZR1X clocked an astonishing 6:49.275, while the ZR1 followed close behind with 6:50.763, both besting Ford’s Mustang GTD record of 6:52.072 and solidifying Corvette’s dominance.
Actual Corvette Engineers Set the Record!
Chevrolet’s run was piloted entirely by in-house engineers, not hired professional racing drivers. The ZR1X lap was driven by vehicle dynamics engineer Drew Cattell, the ZR1 by Brian Wallace, and the Z06 by performance manager Aaron Link.

This decision demonstrates Chevy's faith in the individuals who have actually built the car. GM Motorsport chief Ken Morris said: "We’ve created a different kind of relationship between our cars, iconic tracks, and our engineers, it is how we develop our vehicles. Brian, Aaron and Drew have grown into world-class drivers and even better engineers. Their lap times now rank among the fastest ever recorded by non-professionals at the Ring, which is so cool."
This truly is a wonderful gesture by Chevy towards its tremendous Corvette engineers.
Even with a whopping 1,250 hp, the ZR1X only edged ahead of the ZR1 by 1.5 seconds, partly because hybrid system weight has been added. Both cars recorded 186 mph top speeds in the Fuchsröhre compression area and reached 199 mph down the Döttinger Höhe straight.
Ford CEO Fires Back: "Game On"
Ford CEO Jim Farley replied to Corvette's record within two hours. In reply to Corvette's Instagram post, he said: "Congrats to the Corvette team. Game on." We are seated.
What This Means for the Corvette
Retaking the Nürburgring record solidifies Corvette's status as the best American performance car. With the E-Ray hybrid already securing Corvette's electrified future, engineers have confirmed that any electric Corvette has to maintain the visceral feeling that characterizes the brand. For now, the ZR1 and ZR1X wear the crown.

FAQs:
Why is the ZR1X's record lap significant?
With a 6:49.275 lap, the ZR1X set the fastest American-built vehicle ever around the Nürburgring Nordschleife. It dethroned the Mustang GTD from its number one spot and is ahead of all previous American cars.
Are they production vehicles or prototypes?
They are production-spec cars equipped with bare minimum safety upgrades like roll hoops, racing seats, harnesses, and fire suppressants. As the ZR1 and ZR1X are not available for sale in Europe, they were considered prototypes during the Nürburgring run.
Why did Chevy utilize engineers rather than pro drivers?
It highlights GM's trust in its own people. These engineers constructed, calibrated, and tested every aspect of the cars. Ken Morris said that their laps are among the quickest ever laid down by non-professionals, which lends the result an extra degree of credibility.
Is Ford going to try a new record?
Ford's CEO Jim Farley publicly congratulated Chevrolet with a "Game on," suggesting the Mustang GTD can come back to Nürburgring to try to regain the crown.
