Due to reduced visibility and compromised vehicle traction, the Dubai Police report an alarming statistic of one accident per minute during such weather. Last February alone, the Dubai Police recorded 5,268 calls and 479 accidents within just 8 hours.

Water tends to accumulate on the sides of the road during rain (both slow and fast lanes), especially on highways. Staying in the middle lane is advisable as it reduces your chances of driving through water pools and prevents you from riding up on small curbs.

One common cause of accidents in such conditions is hydroplaning, where the vehicle loses its actual grip on the road and essentially floats on a layer of water. In these situations, reduce speed by lifting your foot off the accelerator and steer the vehicle in the desired direction until the tires regain contact with the ground.

A crucial factor in preventing accidents, especially on slippery roads, is to maintain a safe distance—at least the length of five vehicles—so you can stop in time. Additionally, it’s wise to adhere to the specified speed limits and avoid unnecessary maneuvers.

Take a few seconds to ensure all your car lights are functioning before you head out. Check your headlights, fog lights, and turn signals.

Adjust your seat position to ensure you have the best possible view of your surroundings. It’s essential to keep both hands on the steering wheel at all times to help avoid hidden water pools, which can cause you to lose control and hit obstacles.

One often overlooked aspect is ensuring your tires are in good condition. Check for adequate tread depth (3-4 mm) to enhance your vehicle's responsiveness when steering and stopping on wet roads.
