Dubai Announces First Successful Test Flight of Air Taxi Ahead of 2026 Rollout
Tags:

In a historic leap toward future mobility, Dubai has successfully completed the first test flight of its highly anticipated air taxi, signaling a major step toward launching autonomous flying vehicles by 2026.
What Happened?
The test flight took place near the emirate’s iconic Skyports vertiport in Palm Jumeirah. The electric air taxi, developed by Joby Aviation, lifted off in a smooth demonstration attended by top officials from the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and the General Civil Aviation Authority.
This marks the first time a full-sized electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft has flown in the UAE airspace under real-world conditions.
When Will Flying Taxis Be Available in Dubai?
- Official launch: Expected in 2026
- Initial routes: Downtown Dubai, Dubai International Airport (DXB), Palm Jumeirah, and Dubai Marina
- Operator: Joby Aviation, in collaboration with the RTA
Why This Matters
Dubai aims to be the first city in the world to operate a fully functional air taxi service. The air taxis are designed to reduce road congestion and offer faster, emission-free travel across key locations in the city.
According to the RTA, a trip from Dubai International Airport to Palm Jumeirah is expected to take just 10 minutes—a journey that normally takes 45 minutes by car.
About the Air Taxi
- Model: Joby S4 eVTOL
- Top Speed: 320 km/h
- Range: 160 km per charge
- Capacity: 4 passengers + pilot
- Noise level: 100x quieter than a helicopter
Who Attended the Test Flight?
The event was attended by His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General of the RTA, and representatives from Joby Aviation and Skyports Infrastructure. The test flight was also covered widely by local and international media.
What’s Next?
With the successful flight behind them, Dubai’s RTA and Joby will now begin trial operations and testing at other key locations across the city. The full commercial rollout is still on track for 2026.
