Dubai Police Proposes Reducing Speed Limits to Enhance Road Safety

Introduction
Dubai Police and the Roads and Traffic Authority are considering the implementation of lower speed limits on Dubai roads. This decision comes in response to the rising number of run-over incidents.
Current Statistics on Run-Over Incidents
Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Chief of the Dubai Police Traffic Department, reported:
- Since the beginning of the year, there have been 27 deaths caused by run-over incidents.
- This marks an increase from last year’s 24 deaths during the same period.
- The majority of the victims are Asian labourers attempting to cross major roads.
Main Roads Affected
The incidents predominantly occur on key arteries such as:
- Shaikh Zayed Road
- Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road
Proposed Speed Limit Reduction
Major General Al Zafein emphasized the importance of reducing speed limits:
“Reducing the speed limit is important and in my opinion would save lives because accidents are bound to happen; however the impact of the accident would be much less if the cars were travelling at a lower speed and instead of people dying they might, god forbid, sustain less severe injuries.”
Conclusion
The proposal to lower speed limits aims to enhance road safety and reduce fatalities caused by run-over incidents in Dubai. This approach reflects a proactive strategy to safeguard vulnerable road users.
