Car Care Tips to Enhance Performance
Your car can be the second most important purchase you make after buying a home. Depending on the type, model, and specifications, it can sometimes be considered an investment due to its necessity in many countries. To maintain your investment for potential resale or to avoid unnecessary breakdowns, it's essential to follow these regular maintenance tips.
Vehicle Inspection Tips
Engine Oil
Engine oil is the viscous substance that keeps your engine running smoothly. A lack of oil or dirty oil can severely affect engine performance, potentially causing it to stall. To check the oil level and its cleanliness, all cars come equipped with a dipstick that extends from within the engine. The oil level should ideally be in the middle of the measuring tool, exhibiting a clear, viscous color. When changing oil, manufacturers generally recommend doing so every 5,000 to 10,000 kilometers, depending on the type of oil used.
Tire Pressure
Over-inflated tires can burst at any moment, while under-inflated tires can damage the wheels and increase fuel consumption. You can find the appropriate tire pressure for your vehicle in the manual that comes with every car or on the label located on the lower side of the driver’s door.
Brakes
Always ensure to check your brakes regularly. You may need new brakes if you hear a squealing sound when applying them or if the brake fluid level drops below the normal range. The squealing sound may persist even after changing the brakes due to the time it takes for the new brakes to adjust to the pads. However, if this noise does not go away after a few days, it is advisable to inspect the braking system.
Engine Coolant
Regardless of how smoothly the engine operates, there will always be a rise in temperature due to combustion processes occurring within it. To prevent overheating, the engine coolant plays a crucial role. Regularly check the coolant level to avoid any potential failures.
Air Filter
The air filter helps keep unwanted elements away from the engine, which causes it to become dirty quickly. When this happens, fuel consumption can increase by as much as 10% more than usual.
Tire Tread
New tire treads enhance grip on the road and improve the vehicle's responsiveness to engine commands. They also significantly aid in effective stopping when using the brakes. If you drive on a slippery road with worn treads, the vehicle's grip will be weak, which can be extremely dangerous.
