In the fifth episode of "Desert Driving Tips," desert driving experts at Ford agree that the risk of a vehicle getting stuck in the sand can be minimized by following the saying, "A stitch in time saves nine" while driving.
Avoiding Vehicle Entrapment
Mike Chavez, one of the series presenters and a senior technician on Ford's Middle East product development team, stated, "The best way to avoid getting your vehicle stuck is to be aware of what's happening and to think proactively at all times. The key is not to resist the force of gravity. There’s no point in fighting it; resistance in the desert is much like resistance in water. You should go with the flow."
Driving Strategies
He added, "As soon as you feel your vehicle is about to get stuck in the sand and momentum is fading, change direction and try to find a path where the sand is more compact, or you should attempt to drive downhill to find a firmer route."
Navigating Sand Dunes
If your vehicle struggles to ascend sand dunes, pressing the accelerator harder isn't the solution. This will exceed the tires' traction capacity, causing them to spin in place and further entrench your vehicle in the sand. If you insist on this approach, your tires will sink until the entire underside of your vehicle is resting on the sand, leaving you stuck on a dune awaiting assistance.
If there isn't enough momentum to navigate the sand dunes, ensure your vehicle's front is directed downward. If this approach isn't feasible, lift your foot off the accelerator to stop, check that the path behind your vehicle is clear, and reverse down the dune. This way, you'll be able to either try again or find an easier route.
