Exploring Nissan's Barcelona Factory - 2017 Navara Production
Introduction
Our journey to Spain included a visit to Nissan's Barcelona factory, focusing on the launch of the 2017 Navara. This facility serves as Nissan's European hub for producing light commercial vehicles (LCVs) and is part of a network of four plants that are integral to the company’s operations in Europe.
Barcelona Factory
The Barcelona factory features two distinct production lines for passenger cars and commercial vehicles, working in harmony with the nearby Sant Andreu plant, which specializes in manufacturing vehicle bodies. In contrast, the Cantabria plant collaborates with Renault, while the Avila plant focuses solely on truck production.
Production Output
Models produced at the Barcelona plant include:
- NP300 Navara
- Pulsar
- NV200
- e-NV200
In 2015, the Barcelona and Avila plants together manufactured 101,025 vehicles, with projections for 2016 estimating an output of 140,000 units.
Factory Awards
The Barcelona factory has received several accolades, including a quality award in 2013 and the Nissan Global Quality Award in 2014. Notably, it is the only facility outside of Japan authorized to export vehicles back to Japan. Analyzing the cost structure at the Barcelona plant, 8% is attributed to labor, 17% to logistics, and 75% to materials.
Statements from Officials
Frank Torres, Managing Director of Nissan Motors, stated: "It is extremely important for me to ensure that the Barcelona factory remains competitive, as this opens up new avenues for production that significantly impact the people we employ. In the coming years, the Barcelona plant will operate at full capacity, with an annual production target of 200,000 units while maintaining a focus on new model production. Given the recent challenging environment, this is not only a significant achievement for Nissan but for the entire industry in this country."
