Powerful Performance of the All-New MINI JCW at Yas Marina Circuit
MINI UAE, in association with AGMC and Abu Dhabi Motors, held a media drive at Yas Marina Circuit for the all-new MINI hatch JCW. Termed as the ‘most powerful MINI ever built’, the JCW was put through a series of tests to showcase the sporty nature of this icon.
Event Overview
The event comprised of the following:
- Handling dynamics
- Drag race
- Track drive
Highlights of the New MINI JCW
Some highlights of the new JCW include:
- 2.0 liter turbocharged engine producing 228 BHP and 320 Nm of torque
- 6-speed auto/manual transmission
- Front-wheel drive (FWD)
- 0-100 kph in 6.1 seconds
- Available only in 3-door model
Driving Experience
The new MINI JCW delivers what it promises – power. It is incredibly quick and nimble, enhanced by the glorious turbo noise, creating a thrilling driving experience. However, the power delivery and handling in corners can take some adjustment.
The JCW accelerates swiftly from a standstill, but after reaching 5000 RPM, the sensation diminishes, and the car feels slower. In simpler terms, there is no need to redline the car to achieve optimum performance. Furthermore, the gearbox exhibits noticeable lag during both upshifting and downshifting, which is significant in today’s automotive standards.
The biggest challenge encountered during the drive was in cornering; the car seemed to alternate between oversteering and understeering. I have never experienced a FWD vehicle slip as much as this compact car. Additionally, it exhibits noticeable wiggling during hard braking. To summarize, the JCW can be a handful on the track, but it offers a lot of fun once you master the chassis dynamics.
Comparison with the Cooper S
In contrast, the MINI Cooper S is an overall balanced car, featuring smooth power delivery and familiar handling characteristics. It feels more planted on the track and remains stable during hard braking. However, it lacks the excitement and 'zing' found in the JCW, along with an average engine sound.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, MINI has successfully crafted a direct rival for the Focus ST and Golf R with the JCW. However, there is still room for improvement, particularly regarding grip. An all-wheel drive (AWD) option could potentially enhance the car's character.
