Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro Production Halted Due to Supply Chain Issues
Tags:
Introduction
The Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro are iconic names in the sports car world, particularly in the muscle car segment. Unfortunately, production of both vehicles has recently been temporarily halted due to supply chain issues that are impacting various industries.
Production Halt
General Motors
General Motors has decided to suspend production at its Grand River Assembly plant, which manufactures both the Camaro and the Cadillac CT4 and CT5. All these vehicles share the same platform. General Motors has not specified which parts are in short supply, but a company spokesperson indicated that it is not related to semiconductor chips.
Ford
Reports indicate that the primary shortage is in semiconductors, which is the reason for Ford's closure of the Flat Rock Assembly plant in Michigan, dedicated solely to manufacturing the Mustang. It is worth noting that other Ford factories in the U.S. will continue operations as usual for the time being.
Impact of Parts Shortage on Production
Additionally, Ford has unfortunately had to halt production at other facilities due to chip shortages, such as the assembly plant in Kansas City where the F-150 is produced. Car sales plummeted by approximately 16% in the first quarter due to supply chain crises stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Remaining Vehicles
Currently, the only muscle car being produced is the Dodge Challenger, manufactured at the Stellantis plant in Ontario, Canada. Production at the aforementioned General Motors and Ford facilities is expected to resume on April 11.
