Introduction
Many people do not pay much attention to the condition of their car's headlights, thinking that as long as they light up, everything is fine. However, this misconception can lead to diminished visibility. One of the primary reasons for headlight dimness is a process known as oxidation.
To simplify, oxidation is a chemical reaction that clouds the headlight lenses over many years. This process creates an uneven layer on the headlights, potentially reducing the light output by up to 50%. Furthermore, it can scatter the emitted light, making it difficult for headlights to project a straight beam, which is certainly undesirable.
Fortunately, there are several methods to restore your headlights. The three most popular methods include using glass cleaners, headlight restoration kits, or my personal favorite, toothpaste. Let’s delve into the details of these methods.
Method 1: Using Glass Cleaners
- Step 1: Begin by cleaning the glass with a standard glass cleaner.
- Step 2: After cleaning the lenses, dry them thoroughly, then apply a gloss coating for cars or plastic. Be careful not to get any coating on rubber parts, and avoid applying it in direct sunlight.
- Step 3: Polish the lenses either by hand or with a cloth. This will help protect the headlights.
Method 2: Headlight Restoration Kit
- Step 1: Purchase a headlight restoration kit; there are many types available. Ensure that the kit includes sandpaper, adhesive tape, and lens polish.
- Step 2: Apply the adhesive tape around the edges of the lens to avoid polishing any other part of the car, as this could damage the paint.
- Step 3: Generally, the worse your headlights are, the coarser the sandpaper you will need. If your headlights are not too bad, 500 grit sandpaper should suffice, but if they are in very poor condition, you might need sandpaper as coarse as 2500 grit. Before using sandpaper, wet it with soap and water, then take a cloth soaked in lens cleaner and wipe the headlights.
- Step 4: Remove the oxidation. Use the sandpaper in a side-to-side motion to eliminate the oxidation. After a certain number of passes, wet the sandpaper and repeat the process. The headlights should remain wet throughout. Start with 500 grit sandpaper, then move to 1200, 2000, and finally 2500 grit. After sanding, apply the polish and let it dry for 5-10 minutes before wiping the headlights clean.
- Step 5: Apply a layer of protective wax to the clean lens. This will shield the lens from future damage. Always start from the top.
- Step 6: Remove the adhesive tape, and you'll have headlights that look like new!
Finally: Toothpaste Method
- Step 1: Apply some toothpaste to a sponge and scrub the headlights vigorously for a few minutes.
- Step 2: Rinse off the toothpaste and use car wax, allowing it to dry before rinsing the headlights again. Now your headlights will be sparkling clean!
