Hyundai i30 N: The Upcoming Performance Hatchback
Introduction to Hyundai's Performance N Division
Hyundai’s performance N division, a name that connotes the connection between Namyang and the Nürburgring – the former being the birthplace of all Hyundai cars and the latter being the track used to hone high performance technologies – is busy working on the brand’s first true sports car.
Hyundai i30 N Overview
The Hyundai i30 Hatchback, showcased in the video, is set to compete with hot hatch heavyweights such as the Volkswagen Golf GTI and the Ford Focus ST. The new turbocharged 2.0-liter engine is expected to deliver 260 horsepower and features an operatic sound accompanied by crackles, pops, and snorts.
Performance Features
To elevate Hyundai from its current offerings of warm hatchbacks, the i30 N is expected to include:
- Retuned steering
- Upgraded suspension
- High performance tires
- Redesigned gear linkage for shorter, swifter throws
The Korean brand is committed to providing a worthy rival to the GTI, even stiffening the engine and gearbox mounts to enhance delivery and response.

- Bigger air intake vents
- Twin exhaust pipes

- Bigger brakes
Launch and Availability
The reveal of Korea’s take on a hot hatch is scheduled for the 2016 Paris Motor Show in September, with sales estimated to begin in early 2017.
